The Continus Coggygria - Royal Purple Smoke Tree is a deciduous shrub with maroon-red foliage and then change to a velvety purple color as the colder months approach. During the spring and summer months they do bloom very small flowers, but the real showstopper are the seed clusters that form red feathery plumes once the flower matures. This shrub can be pruned and kept as a small decorative hedge or border shrub to add some color pop. But can also be shaped into a small tree to give that wow factor to your landscape or garden.
Though they do go into dormancy in winter months and lose their foliage, it is a fast and easy grower worthy of the crown and your garden.
Product Features
Hardiness Zone
Royal Purple Smoke Tree grows well in USDA zones 4–8 and is suited for a range of climates, tolerating both cold winters and hot, dry summers. Trees planted outside of these zones may struggle to thrive.
Growth & Care
This deciduous shrub or small tree grows 10–15 feet tall and wide with a naturally upright, rounded form. It is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in full sun. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape or rejuvenate growth as needed.
Seasonal Interest
Foliage emerges deep purple in spring, holds its color through summer, and turns fiery red-orange in fall. In midsummer, wispy flower clusters rise above the leaves, creating a smoky, cloud-like effect.
Landscape Uses
Royal Purple Smoke Tree excels as a focal-point shrub or small tree, bringing dramatic color to front yards, mixed borders, or foundation beds. Plant a single specimen near an entryway for instant curb appeal, or group several together for a vibrant, low‑maintenance screen.
